All of the baggage is transported using mules, so you just have to carry your binoculars. There is a good chance to see the endemic and endangered Yellow-tailed Wooly Monkey in this montane forest. Preliminary surveys of this area have already identified 234 species of birds; we hope to increase that list! Other interesting birds that can be seen here include the Cinnamon Screech-Owl, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Royal Sunangel, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Rusty-tinged Antpitta, Inca Flycatcher, Johnson’s Tody-tyrant, Peruvian Tyrannulet (the birds here belong to an undescribed population), White-capped Tanager and other 20 species of tanagers. As the night comes we will go out to look for the Long-whiskered Owlet. We will overnight at a house with very basic services.
Day 4: La Esperanza Forest
We will have another day for birding in this area trying to locate other birds that we may have missed the first day. We will also have a second chance to locate a troop of the beautiful Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey, a species that was rediscovered just a few decades ago. At night we will go out again to search for Long-whiskered Owlets and other nocturnal birds.
Day 5: La Esperanza, Moyobamba, Quebrada Mishquiyacu
From La Esperanza we will travel to Moyobamba where we will eat lunch. On the road we will have another opportunity to make short stops along the Abra Patricia reserve.
