You, sir, should be ashamed of yourself. How can you possibly justify the collecting of birds that are on the brink of extinction? I am certain you did not obtain authorization from ProAves. What are you doing to preserve Colombian birds from extinction other than collecting specimens for a natural history museum?

The fact of the matter is that Diego Caranton illegally and without authorization killed then stole tow of these incredibly rare birds. Subsequently, he was found guilty by a Federal Colombian court of law.

Here is a link to the english version of the editorial from Conservacion Colombia. It outlines more or less how Sr. Caranton broke his contract with Proaves and why negotiations fell apart. It also confirms that the collection of two specimens by Caranton was illegal. For this, ironically, Proaves will be penalized by local authorities. Enjoy.

Hi All,
Diego has given a link that brings up a lot of the issues involved in the contraversy surrounding this new species. However, I am sure that all who read the Stiles and Cadena article realize that that is only one side of the story. Proaves is in the process of writing up an article that covers their side of the story. This is a really unfortunate situation and everyone who I have talked with within the Proaves organization has expressed regret that an agreement could not be reached between the original discoverer, Diego Caranton and Proaves.
I’ll post the link when it becomes available.
